I couldn't help but notice that the castle town I was in before heading to the Sanctum was called Espertown.

It's been a while, but I remember Alphadia Genesis had a plotline involving people known as espers.

Does this mean that this game is set in the same universe as Alphadia Genesis?

I don;t believe so because it would have been a coincidence like Final Fantasy 2 and Final Fantasy 4 having mysdia. The espers are probably just a reoccurring element that exe-create added for the sake of fun and not continuity.

Another example is how Dragon Quest series has several reoccurring places in different universes such as Alltrades Abbey/Dharma Shrine and The Medal King's Castle.
