Is it just skill points? I'm trying to level up Glorious Slash and I can't see whether the SP Ring makes a difference or not.

If I remember correctly, SP are what's needed to level up your elemental rank (up to level 99), which enables your party members to learn more magic skills. Take a look at the battle result screen where SP should be one of the things you receive in addition to EXP and Gold.
