I was thinking... If the stats have a max value, is not better to have effects like sleep, poison, mini-mini? And not +str/+vit, etc. And for the arena fights? What would be better?

It depends on your objectives. I always plan to fight the bonus boses, and usually status effects don't work on them, or only on a very limited basis. So that is why I try to build up things like critical, hp restore, etc. In fact, if you put in some grinding time, it is possible to get two pumped up weapons for each character: one with status effects, and one for the big bosses. Of course...the weapons for the big bosses will carve up everybody else without the need for status effects. So for me, I don't bother with the status stuff.
If you don't plan on doing the bonus bosses, it might be faster (less grinding) to enhance the status effects, but I am not sure about that.

I was thinking the same thing. I got a +98 crit, and transplanted to my main weapon. Now i can farm clinker-giga gold demons, and have the other characters with +exp/+gold. Thanks for the reply.

I usually do a combination, like give one person STR, INT, Critical and Paralysis. Give another STR, INT, Steal, and maybe Poison or Virus/Fever.
Or skip attribute boosting altogether, since those are really more for secret arena or other bonus bosses (in my opinion). It took me a long time to figure out weapon effects though, because I'm still more of a casual player, and usually more focused on the story.
Generally, if you play on Easy difficulty, you can ignore them altogether, but as you up the difficulty they become more important. For status effects I always recommend Critical on a couple of characters, then Paralysis and Steal on characters who can attack all enemies. Beyond that, I say go with whatever you think is cool.
P.S. For what it's worth, also pay attention to the weapon description (where it says what bonuses the weapon gives, for example in Asdivine Cross, a Broad Sword attacks all enemies, where in other titles a Blood Sword restores a small amount of HP to the character.) Some weapons will give SPD or STR +5%, or will do normal damage against clinker/metal types, or do 1.5x damage against Light-based enemies, etc.
I used to just look at the weapon's Base ATK, and not read the description at all. Turns out, the so-called "weaker" weapons often have better effects.
Anyway that's my two cents.

I've pretty much ignored custom until it told me "you cannot carry more weapon".
Even there i've just upgraded best weapon i had at the time, ignoring the effects. In normal mode is enough to progress.
Around 100-140 attack damage i begin to care about effect.
Best effect so far is crit, for damage and to smash special enemies even without dedicated gems.
Then i advise for hp-up and mp-up, this effect applies before your turn, filling up your precious life and magic energy.
Worst effect is steal. Every enemy killed will give you a message "you steal this" "you failed to steal that" freezing game for a second, more enemies more delay, making the grind a pain.

Crit is always my first choice. Also, I recommend paralyze for one person, especially if they have a weapon or accessory to attack all.
The other fun combination where possible, is a weapon with swoon, paralyze, crit, maybe gnome (or whatever 4th option you want), that can attack all enemies,
and equip a Counter accessory. Then whenever that character gets attacked, they counter attack ALL ENEMIES, and if Swoon doesn't kill them they'll either be paralyzed, or the crit damage will finish them off.
I used this in Asdivine Cross and the results are epic.
