When Karm created his amazing Mystic Chronicles guide, he mentioned that he couldn't beat Arena Top Rank S. I found a strategy that works, and tested it repeatedly. It can fail if the player gets unlucky, but it will usually succeed.
I used Lux and the healer. Lux was enhanced with dexterity fruits (the workshop gather-helpers flood the player with them if they're sent to fetch stuff from Irkalla in the postgame). The healer was enhanced with fruits to raise her maximum HP, but I didn't grind the arena excessively for them. I just did one arena battle with each possible pair of party members, in order to see the special victory cutscene interactions.
Lux and the healer were both level 95. Trying at a lower level is not advised.
Lux had maxed-out Wizard Killer armor for +1000 magic resistance, a maxed out Hrotti weapon to do as much damage as possible, a Soul Ring to block instant death, and an ice pendant because enemies do more damage with ice magic than anything else in this fight. A general magic-resistant item might have worked in place of the ice pendant.
The healer had maxed-out Soul Clothes for the magic resistance, a Soul Ring, and an ice pendant. Her weapon doesn't matter.
Lux had Baron as his guardian beast, set to "Protect". Baron had an ice pendant and defensive stuff equipped.
The healer had Lucius as the guardian beast, set to "Attack". Lucius had an ice pendant and defensive stuff equipped. Equipping the Crest of the Queen "Tool" for more offense was also helpful, on either Baron or Lucius.
BOTH CHARACTERS EAT FOOD TO INCREASE THEIR MAGIC DEFENSE; this greatly improves their odds. The counter offering food is in the lower right of the arena zone.
With this setup, the strategy was simple. Lux spams his mass-hitting Dark Dragon attack, while the healer spams Area Heal every round. The enemies will almost always go first, but Baron and Area Heal usually keep Lux alive long enough to win.
