Can't seem to get shows no makeup passive to trigger even though I unequipped all his equipment (weapon, armor and accessory) fought 1 battle as the guide says to do and nothing happend.
I don't know why it doesn't work but I have attached a picture so you can see I have no equipment on shaw.
Any help would be appreciated.

Question: how do I get preemptive attacks to level up Viola's Pioneer skill? Help in game says that preemptive attacks are when characters act immediately, but every combat I encounter where my characters are the first in turn seems to not count.
Do I need for Viola to be the first one in the action order?

Try to fight a battle while Shaw has nothing equipped, and let Shaw kill all enemies. That might do the trick (hopefully).

That worked
But after some simple testing Shaw only has to land the final blow on 1 enemy and that unlocks the passive.
You don't even need to win the battle just defeat 1 enemy and that's it.

Preemptive attacks randomly happen at the start of a fight same as getting ambushed.
It has nothing to do with viola being first to act.

Wait. Is preemptive attack like getting two turns in the first round; like one is the surprise round and the next is the normal turn? Like Dungeons and Dragons' surprise round?
I instinctively relate "preemptive" to how the said word works on Persona (which is just getting the first turn in combat).
