My mistake--I believe I meant "DragonLord." But you probably don't want to battle him until you are ready to finish the game prior to the post-game. You should be able to get all the special drops without attacking the DragonLord. My notes are sketchy here, but I have a complete list of the monsters and there is no "DarkLord," so it must be the DragonLord, and I do recall getting a special drop from him.
In my old post on the topic, I listed the locations where I found what the Japanese wiki calls "strong bosses." That wiki lists just 9 "strong bosses" all of which can drop a "special drop." The list includes the "craft mage," which I think is the DragonLord. In other places the wiki refers to this final boss as the "Dragon King" and says that if you defeat him, there is no formal ending, but you now can save "clear" data.
The wiki has these 9 locations for "strong bosses":
East Tower, West Cave, Port City, Forest Castle, Elven Village, Empire, Light & Dark Cave, Wind Tower, and Desert Castle. This is the same list I posted and validated, so 9 strong bosses. This means that some boss(es) must drop more than a single special weapon. I got all 11 of the special drops from just these locations.

Here is something that may help--it is the google translate:
"Rare items total about every 10LV of LV defeated all the strength boss is to come
(even continue the same strength boss, does not matter thoroughly a variety of strong boss.) "
My interpretation is that after you raise cumulative level of strong boss(es) by about 10, you next can get a special drop. It doesn't matter which boss, so perhaps one boss in theory could drop all the specials. But that would mean you would raise the boss to level of 100+, so you probably could not defeat him. That sort of explains why I said that my notes indicated I got most of the drops from Level 7/8 of the special bosses. I think it is fewer than 10 victories needed to "trigger" the special drop.
It is possible that the translated passage does not refer to the special bosses, but I think it does.

I think that any translation from Japanese to English should be read loosely. Maybe it tells that every 10 boss levels the Boss has more to drop the next special (secret equipment). Or you can be right as well.

Another thing I noticed : Whenever you get to any boss room (some exceptions like Treasure boss and the two forest boss and Bird of the Gale) they might not show up first time you enter boss room to get daily fight. So at any dungeon boss room except mentioned above (Kracken also is usually missing the first time) it is better to immediately go out and in so the Boss will be there. It's a good time save.
