You don't need to steal. You're just relying on the drop rate.

Also how does Treasure Gems work? Does it increase the chace of finding things of the wearer or the whole team?

I don't know for sure, but Ultra Rare gems seem to affect the whole team. So Treasure gems probably work the same for Rocks and Boxes. :shrug:
