Is this game too mature?

I've been trying to think if there's any Kemco games that go a bit "darker" than usual, and the one that I came up with is Chrome Wolf.

For anyone who hasn't played it, it's based around a military revolt/revolution, and it really shows how the main party members struggle to come to terms with each other's past actions.

(Semi spoiler, but it happens in the first 5 minutes of the game, so no need to hide it...) The main character is a soldier, who's ordered to slaughter innocent civilians in a town, who the Empire suspects of "aiding" the rebellion. And the main female character somehow is connected to the people he shot (I think he killed her fiance or something), yet is forced to serve alongside him even though she wants to kill him to get revenge.

The way these two interact, and grow throughout the game, is done really well, IMO.

It also has the best tragic ending of any Kemco game (which ending, I will not share, not even in a spoiler. I will not share it in a house, I will not share it with a mouse... )

And this story reminds me Trails in the Sky Joshua's tragedy as like as two peas.

I think I have interest in these "stories" not only cause of "darker" parts, but because I just finished Asdivine Dios & Menace, and I sick of Izayois pokerface and "what's goin' on here" expressions. Just in need more living (may be more emotional) characters.

Yeah, and a neat thing about Chrome Wolf was that it did make an effort to go pretty deep with "shades of grey", such as the
meeting between your rebellion and the emperor, where he essentially (and pretty effectively) shot down the rebellion's altruistic plans as naive and inevitably doomed to failure by stating that instead of creating a new, improved status quo, they were essentially (more or less) just reversing the roles and creating a nation where the former oppressors were destined to become oppressed.
While not on the same level, Covenant of Solitude could almost be described as Magitec's trial run for Chrome Wolf, as they played with a lot of the same sorts of "shades of grey" between the different factions.

Other games might have had dark moments, but those two, of the ones I've played, were the ones that went the distance to create what I'd call a more mature plot as opposed to the standard "swords-n-sorcery fun" that Kemco tends to repeatedly put on the market.

How convenient for me, Covenant of Solitude is next on my play list (one of 8-10 games I still haven't played yet.)

Not as dark, but other games that stand out as being not so "cookie cutter" were Eclipse of Illusion and Destiny Fantasia. I thought they both had some surprising moments. On the other hand, Link of Hearts has some truly funny dialogue and some interesting twists (and bosses that made me say bad words...)

Biggest surprise ending for me though was Crystareino, though a lot of people complained about the menus in that one I think it's great.

Anyway I'm now way off topic :P so I'll leave off now.

One thing to know about Covenant: That game does not mess around. Boss fights can be absolutely brutal because, like Chrome Wolf, they tend to be a boss and two sidekicks, but they are scaled up difficulty-wise from Chrome's. I had to do a bit o' grinding to beat a few of them (and more than a bit for the final one, which was a tooth-and-nail battle even after that).

And Link of Hearts was a game I didn't really think was good, but it had some memorable bits. Since on other consoles, I'm playing Grandia and Lunar the Silver Star, that game reminded me of a small-budget version of those (because the kid, Daichi or whatever, was kind of an expy of Justin and Alex mainly). I loved the early-game twist that led to both parties meeting each other, as well as the endgame twist. Kind of one of those examples where they had some great concepts, but just didn't have enough time to make a legit good game around them. But it did give me one of the greatest enemies of all time: THE SEIZURE WIZARD. Seriously, look at the animation for the wizard-type enemies. They look like they're convulsing or something the way they twitch.

Oh god, that was some good games there especially with the PSX version of Silver Star that i consider to be a good game on it's own right with so much polish done in the remakes. I especially liked the character development and the fleshed out NPCs in the game.

But back to link of hearts,
I was surprised when i discovered that the villain on earth was NOT lying when he said the blue key would bring destruction. I thought he was lying and used the blue key. Cue to a game over screen of me destroying the moon and bringing the end of the world. Woops. Although... if kemco would have more time, then that would have been a good idea to include a 2nd quest in which some new heroes try to survive the fallout in a post-apocalyptic world and kill the mother/guardian before she wipes out the earth for good.
We don't make mistakes. We just have happy accidents.

That is for sure! It was a bummer but I liked it because you don't see a lot of games doing that!
Recently beaten since April 1: Sephirothic Stories (android, kemco), Soulblazer (snes, arpg), Seek hearts (android, kemco), Super Metroid (snes), Legend of Tetrarchs (android, kemco), Castlevania 4 (snes), Actraiser (snes), Demons Crest (snes, platformer), Holy Umbrella (snes, platformer), Arcana (snes rpg)

Kemco games I still need to beat: (2) Dragon Lapis, Dimension Cross

TRUE! If you come unprepared, you will get roasted, toasted and burnt to a crisp! Always have plenty of healing items with you, like, more than you would normally need and be prepared to grind at least 2 levels before each boss fight. It is not an easy game but was rewarding. I liked that game!

I think it is not strange that it was just published by EXE-CREATE. My theory is that by the time when the Unlucky Hero was released, EXE-CREATE was not yet under Kemco’s supervision. This is why a whole different company released the English version.
Old thread but didn't KEMCO already handled or even supervised EXE since the first Alphadia released for Softbank and DoCoMo JP phones back in 07.

The fact that KEMCO even has the site for the original pentalogy of Alphadia for the JP phones.

My theory for this is that they are trying releasing games as the exclusive developers x publishers until 2014. I may be wrong in my whole comment because of possible misunderstanding your comment but fact that they made this game 1 year later after Alphadia V (which is in © is 2011 KEMCO/EXE-CREATE) and got an android port in the same year or just few or many months after the game release in DoCoMo and Softbank.
This is why Kemco released a remake of the Asdivine Cross despite the fact that the original one was still around (and looked really old).
This make me wondered too, since the copyright is plain ©2016 despite the original Cross existing in JP phones. The copyright should be 2010 or 11-2016 just like in recent remakes remembering their original released versions like Asdivine Saga, ©2008-2021.

I know i say something like this in my previous post regarding Remakes or maybe i mention it in Discord, that Cross is acting "exclusive" as new series in Asdivine during the English release and popularity of Asdivine series in the English platform. Since Asdivine Hearts is one of the possible factor.
I’m pretty sure the first two Alphadias also looked a little differently, but then were remaked by Kemco, and this is why EXE-CREATE’s webpages redirect to corresponding Kemco webpages.
They are? They seems the same despite the fact that i didn't play the original release and without knowledge between the differences of 2007 and 2011 android port tho i'm here to say that it's not a remake rather is just an android port, can't confirmed, yes, but it's more possible, for me.
